Scaling Onboarding Across Meta’s Wearable Portfolio

Building a reusable onboarding framework that accelerated launches across Meta’s growing AI wearables portfolio.

Role
Senior Product Designer — Wearables Onboarding (Displayless Glasses)
Team
3 Product Designers · Product Management · Engineering · Content Design · Motion Design · UX Research
Platform
iOS & Android · 6+ AI Wearables

As Meta expanded from a single AI glasses product to a growing portfolio of AI wearables, onboarding needed to scale across new devices, brands, and hardware capabilities — without reinventing the experience for every launch.

As one of three product designers on the Wearables Onboarding team, I led onboarding for Meta’s displayless glasses portfolio. I partnered closely with Product Management, Engineering, Content Design, Motion Design, UX Research, and external creative agencies to evolve a modular onboarding framework that balanced activation, education, and personalization while enabling faster, more consistent product launches.

My Focus

Onboarding Architecture

Defined how activation, OTA, education, and personalization work together as a scalable onboarding system.

Product Launches

Led onboarding design and launch readiness across 4+ wearable product launches.

Activation Experience

Designed the critical setup journey to maximize successful device activation.

Education Strategy

Created tailored hardware tours and Meta AI education for each product while maintaining a shared framework.

Launch Assets

Partnered with external creative agencies and Marketing to deliver production-ready pairing visuals, product tours, motion assets, and onboarding content.

A Reusable Onboarding Framework

Rather than redesigning onboarding for every product, I helped establish a modular framework organized around four user goals:

Onboarding framework — Activate, Prepare, Learn, Personalize

The shared architecture allowed each new device to reuse the same onboarding foundation while customizing branding, educational content, and product-specific capabilities.

Key Design Decisions

Optimize for Activation

I streamlined the mandatory setup journey to help users pair and activate their device as quickly as possible, while moving non-essential tasks later in the experience to reduce friction.

Activation flow

Progressive Education

I designed onboarding to progressively introduce hardware interactions, Meta AI capabilities, and optional features, helping users build confidence before exploring more advanced functionality.

Personalized Feature Setup

I designed a personalized feature discovery framework that curated optional setup based on user context and device capabilities. By surfacing only the most relevant features, onboarding became more glanceable while reinforcing each product’s unique value proposition.

Results

  • Designed onboarding across 6+ wearable products on iOS and Android.
  • Delivered launch-ready onboarding for 4 major wearable launches.
  • Achieved 96.7% 24-hour onboarding completion for Ray-Ban Meta Optics.
  • Established reusable onboarding patterns adopted across multiple product generations.
  • Created a scalable foundation that enabled continuous experimentation and rapid product launches.

A Village Behind Every Launch

Onboarding is where every part of the product comes together. Behind every launch was an incredible team spanning Product Management, Content Design, Engineering, Hardware UX, Connectivity, Motion Design, UX Research, Marketing, Data Science, and countless feature teams.

I’m incredibly grateful for everyone who challenged ideas, sweated the details, solved impossible problems, and made these launches happen. It truly takes a village.
